Why These Three Friends Always Sit Together During Exams (And Other Translation Secrets)

Hey guys! You know what? Yesterday was… (well, based on Korean time anyway) the day when Su-ho gave Si-eun a thumbs up 👍 and said “You’re really a total lunatic” 😂 Did anyone else pick up on this? I think my Weak Hero fever is probably gonna wrap up around the time Si-eun transfers to Eunjang High… that’d be mid-July, right? Such a weird feeling, all of Class 1’s timeline happened in just about 40 days, and yesterday being such a milestone day for this trio’s friendship… 💗

Why Do Su-ho, Si-eun, and Beom-seok Always Sit Together?

So, one of my subscribers left this comment that really hit the nail on the head. This was actually a topic I’d been wanting to dig into for a while, and their question gave me just the push I needed to finally tackle it.

They were talking about how Su-ho, Si-eun, and Beom-seok always end up sitting next to each other during exams, and they thought it was just a melodramatic directorial choice. From their perspective, ‘A’ ‘Y’ and ‘O’ seem like letters that are pretty far apart, so they had no idea this was actually based on their surnames.

I had to explain this to them, and their reaction was just so sweet.

In Korean alphabetical order, their surnames all start with the same vowel sound – that ‘ㅇ’ sound. ‘Ahn’ (안), ‘Yeon’ (연), ‘Oh’ (오) all begin with it, which means their student numbers were probably 8, 9, 10 in the class. That’s why they do cleaning duty together and sit together for exams too.

When I shared this detail, my subscriber replied,

Indeed I have noticed the boys sitting together during tests, three adorable rowers of a sinking canoe 🛶 (btw, I love this one 💗) I always thought this was a melodramatic directorial choice. I had no idea this was arranged based on their surnames… Thanks so much for shedding light on this. Now that I know this, it really seems they were fated to be together, at least for a little while. Oh dear, I think I’m gonna cry… 🥹

And honestly? Reading that made me tear up too 🥺 They continued:

This also positions the Lord Guardian of the Back, Ahn Suho, in front of Sieun, where he could not prevent the fentanyl patch incident. I wonder how much of this figured into Yeong Bin’s plans. He’s quite smart after all, no?

That’s exactly right! Yeong-bin’s approach to Beom-seok wasn’t random at all – he knew that during tests, Beom-seok would be sitting right behind Si-eun according to Korean alphabetical order.

In this context, do you remember that scene in episode 8 where Si-eun grabs the fire extinguisher and walks into the classroom (1-6), then without even looking, slams it down next to Tae-hun, who’s sitting at the very last desk (basically the back corner desk where Su-ho usually sits)? The reason Tae-hun sits at that last desk during tests is because his surname is ‘Han’ (한), which is positioned at the very end of the korean alphabet – equivalent to ‘Z’ in the English alphabet

“Are You Sleepy?” – Su-ho’s Real Nuance

Speaking of things that make us emotional… let’s talk about Su-ho’s “Si-eun-ah, are you sleepy?” from that dream scene. This is another instance where the translators did their best with an optimal translation, but what Su-ho actually said to Si-eun was more playful. I’d love to discuss that nuance because it really adds another layer to their dream.

In Korean, he doesn’t ask “Si-eun-ah, are you sleepy?” but specifically “Si-eun-ah, can you sleep?” (시은아, 잠이 오냐?). The actual nuance is more like “Si-eun, after you went and caused all that chaos, how can you possibly sleep?” It’s Su-ho asking playfully, almost teasingly, in that tone he always used with his most beloved friend – but also with the undertone of someone worried about a friend who came back covered in blood.

Yeah, lots of fans keep finding these circular narrative structures in the drama – everyone’s like, “awesome!” This scene is definitely one of Class 1’s best moments. And you know what’s beautiful? Another subscriber pointed out the connection between the yellow lighting in that dream scene and the classroom scene at the beginning of episode 8. They described how the soft yellow light scene is “made so beautifully quiet” with the beeps and hisses of the machinery hushed away, creating “a dream-moment of the purest intimacy between the two boys.”

Reading their comment just naturally brought that scene to mind… it’s such a beautiful, poetic way to describe it. There’s this inside joke among fans about that “yellow lighting” – even at the start of episode 8, when Su-ho, Si-eun, and Beom-seok are sitting side by side in that classroom, the lighting is yellow too. The way the show uses these visual cues to create emotional continuity is incredible.

The OST is like the final puzzle piece that completes this drama. It’s such a relief that it’s now available on Netflix so people can watch it comfortably, right? I recently saw a post analysing how “Awakening” works as Su-ho’s theme and “Again” as Si-eun’s theme, and when I looked at the lyrics they were SO perfect! Especially “Awakening” – it almost perfectly matches the emotions Su-ho would feel after waking up.

Subscriber Request: Was Beom-seok Actually Scolding Si-eun?

One of my subscribers was wondering about Beom-seok’s tone in episode 3, when he’s about to storm off to save Su-ho. They wrote:

The English sub I used was milder, saying, ‘Why should Suho go alone? What will we do if something happens to Suho?’ But upon repeated viewings, I found that another one of the English subs, one of the Chinese subs and the Japanese sub sounds fairly accusatory towards Sieun. ‘Why did you let him go alone?’ The Chinese sub also follows up with, ‘If something happens to Suho, what are you going to do about it?’ The French sub is stronger still, ‘You prefer to abandon Suho?’

They asked me to help clarify what the original Korean said, and I found it really interesting how different these translations turned out to be. So I looked it up, and here’s what Beom-seok actually says:

“Why are you sending Su-ho there alone? You saw what happened back then…” “What are you going to do if something happens to Su-ho?” (왜 수호 혼자 저기 보내냐? 그때 봤잖아… 수호 잘못되면 너 어떡하려고?)

The script book direction is more confrontational – like “Will you take responsibility?” But in the actual drama, it comes across more like Beom-seok is genuinely worried about Su-ho and can’t sit still because of his anxiety. It’s not really a confrontational tone toward Si-eun, but more like he’s nervous and tense because he’s worried something might happen to Su-ho.

The Global Interpretations of “Weak Hero”

Finally, let’s talk about something that really sparked my curiosity about language and translation. One of my subscribers asked:

I also want to know if the Korean title of Weak Hero actually translates to ‘Weak Hero’? I ask this because two Chinese subs give the title as ‘Weak Meinan Hero’, ‘meinan’ being rather similar to ‘ulzzang’. A reference to Sieun’s face looking as pretty as a girl’s in the webtoon?

“弱美男英雄”(Weak Handsome Boy Hero)

“身材矮小又看似纖弱的美少年”(a short and frail-looking beautiful boy)

They mentioned how one of their friends, a lady in her 50s, spontaneously said Si-eun “looks like a girl” without ever reading a webtoon in her life. Then they noted how the French went with “Héros Fragile” choosing a synonym for ‘weak’ that doesn’t come with harsh connotations but rather means ‘frail and delicate’.

“Il est peut-être de petite taille, mais son combat calculateur et brutal laisse des adversaires sans méfiance allongés sur le sol, implorant sa clémence” (He may be small in stature, but his calculating and brutal fighting leaves unsuspecting opponents lying on the ground, begging for his mercy)

Through this subscriber’s comment, I realized how differently each culture interpreted Si-eun’s character. In Chinese, “meinan” means pretty boy or handsome boy, which shows they picked up on Si-eun’s almost feminine beauty that the subscriber mentioned. The French choice of “fragile” is so thoughtful – like those “fragile” stickers on packages at the airport, you know? It suggests something delicate that needs protection rather than something simply powerless. I never would have noticed these subtle differences without this subscriber pointing it out!

But in Korean, “약한영웅” literally means the opposite of strong – something that easily breaks down or falls apart. There’s absolutely no connotation of ‘pretty’ or ‘handsome’ in it. It’s more about how others perceive him as weak-looking, not muscular. That’s probably why the cast keeps saying that Jun-tae comes closest to being the actual weak hero in this story.

Wow.. talking with subscribers from different cultural backgrounds really opens up my perspective on language! So ‘meinan’ means pretty boy, right? The Korean title leans more toward literally meaning a ‘boy who looks weak to others’ rather than having that ‘delicate’ connotation – not muscular, you know what I mean? It’s more about how others perceive him as weak-looking rather than fragile in a delicate sense.
