I don’t think we should listen to these objections. I just looked it up to confirm and in Romeo and Juliet, it’s apparently just 4 to 6 days from their falling in love up until their deaths. You know, so if Shakespeare can get away with that in what is generally considered a masterpiece… I think WHC should be allowed to have Si-eun go on a rampage after a whole 40 days.

Understanding Si-eun’s Psychology: The Perfectionist’s Breaking Point

I’ve always thought it’s totally normal for his personality. Si-eun is a perfectionist and very hard-working person. He builds something, he sacrifices a lot and when it’s damaged, he gets crazy. First he was up to college. When Yeong-bin said ‘Don’t tell teacher, our notes will be affected by it’ he kept silent. He asked them to stop, tried his best and after all that he had one scratch on his work, he went crazy. Then he had friends; he asked Beom-seok to stop. He got beaten up, sacrificed. My response: “No matter how much I think about it, this drama is so beautiful because it doesn’t rush to capture the boys’ dam-bursting emotions with just one single word… That’s probably why we get all these amazing comments, right? If there was one phrase that could capture the boys’ emotions, it would have to be ‘first love,’ just like Director Yoo Su-min said.”

“아무리 생각해봐도 이 드라마가 아름다운 이유는 소년들의 터져나오는 감정을 단 하나의 단어로 성급하게 포착하려 하지 않기 때문이야… 그래서 이런 놀라운 댓글들을 받게 되는 것 같아, 그렇지? 만약 소년들의 감정을 포착할 수 있는 한 마디가 있다면, 유수민 감독이 말한 것처럼 ‘첫사랑’ 이어야 할 거야.”

@zeynepo***** replied: “Exactly. It’s the interaction of complex feelings and different personalities. Their relationships have so many dimensions to explore. And I enjoy that.”

The Parallel Pain: Si-eun and Beom-seok’s Shared Trauma

@kirethomas***** highlighted the crucial parallel between Si-eun and Beom-seok’s reactions:

This is exactly what Beom-seok meant when he told Si-eun that he should understand more than anyone why he did what he did. You literally stated it, that Su-ho was the only light in Si-eun’s life after only knowing darkness. Both Si-eun and Beom-seok actually have the same reaction to losing that light except the method is specific to the character’s psychosis.

It may be overdone, but Park Ji-hoon’s and Hyun-wook’s acting all throughout the drama made it valid.

My response: “You’re absolutely right. Director Yoo Su-min always talks about Park Ji-hoon as ‘an actor who convinces you of everything just by watching his performance’ and he’s constantly praising Choi Hyun-wook too. Speaking of which, the director said about Choi Hyun-wook… there’s a recent magazine interview where the director said ‘I like vulnerable moments when his character is hurt or injured in the drama’ and I think I totally get what he means. There’s something about watching Hyun-wook bleeding or in fight scenes in the drama that’s just so sexy.”

@margarethale-******** replied: “I know right? Ji-hoon killed that stoic character portrayal but Hyun-wook is just so alluring when he is dodging punches.“

My follow-up: “Exactly! I was completely hooked on Si-eun when he stabbed Tae-hoon’s hand with a pen and wrapped Yeong-bin’s face with the curtain before smashing him with a book and Su-ho… wow, I totally fell in love during his action scenes! I heard that Choi Hyun-wook actually has great reflexes because he was an athlete in real life.”

The Emotional Authenticity Debate

I love the fact that the beginning of the drama, he got the answers wrong because he was bullied. An event he had gone through and completely deflected and avoided. But in the end, he got wrong answers in the final exams, not because he blocked the person who caused it but because he was deeply involved and emotionally invested in him.

Awesome analysis, they were 15 years old so everything was more intense. But I didn’t know all the events in the first season happened within 40 days, always thought it was like 4 months, at least 3 months. 40 days is kinda short especially they didn’t see each other every day, so I don’t know… Excuse my delulu but 40 days would be more coherent if romantic feelings were involved.

My response: “Haha yes delulu always makes me laugh! That’s actually why I made this video today. My friends… (my friends around me) kept arguing that it doesn’t make sense for Si-eun to explode like that after only being friends for 41 days. So I made this and now I feel like I’ve totally gotten it all out of my system.”

I also clarified the age issue: “Originally Korea had this weird age counting system where you’re one year old as soon as you’re born, which was totally stupid… But recently the old president abolished that weird age counting law during his term and changed it so you start at 0 when you’re born, so my age went down by two years too. In the show, Si-eun, Su-ho, and Beom-seok all appear as 17 years old, I confirmed it in the script.”

The Realism vs. Emotional Truth Debate

I have friends who always nitpick about realism in fantasy shows while we’re watching together and it’s so annoying. I saw this on Twitter where some Weak Hero fan was watching with their nurse sister, and during Su-ho’s coma scene where he’s on the ventilator, the sister looked at the oxygen machine and was like ‘His vitals look way too normal though?’ Totally killed the mood, but that story was actually hilarious. 😂

@juhim**** had medical knowledge to share: “Actually for someone who is in a coma for that long I think he was supposed to be put on an invasive mechanical ventilation even a tracheostomy but oh well we can just ignore those details.“

There’s something beautifully meta about discussing how nitpicking details can ruin the emotional experience while simultaneously nitpicking medical details in the comments!

And as you know, Su-ho’s financial situation isn’t good, so Beom-seok is probably living in the Philippines, listening to his adoptive father like he said he would, even if it’s just to help with Su-ho’s hospital bills.”
