Although he feigned exasperation with his most persistently ill patient, the truth was that Dr Yeon very much looked forward to Mr Ahn disrupting his routines.

On days when he did not visit because of work demands, Dr Yeon felt the time crawl by.

Such days were random, and he always feared Mr Ahn had been injured at work or at wherever he was gallivanting.

He remembered the ice-cold days of Suho’s coma.

Dr Yeon could endure medical school and military service, including a little-known stint in Iraq that had lasted for three years; even before that he already had the grit to weather the ruthless bullying of his high school days.

He wet Si-eun’s hair with his tears as he kissed the top of his head.
그는 머리 꼭대기에 키스하며 눈물로 시은의 머리카락을 적셨다.

“I’m here, I’m here. Si-eun-ah, I’m here,” he had whispered over and over until Si-eun’s breathing eased.
“나 여기 있어, 여기 있어. 시은아, 내가 여기 있어,” 그는 시은의 숨이 편안해질 때까지 계속해서 속삭였다.

That alone had made him want to quit night delivery work, but when he discussed it with Si-eun the next morning, the boy genius had dismissed the idea.

Oh, you bought some?, asked Si-eun brightly, hoping Suho had brought back some Melona from the neighbourhood mart.
오, 사왔어?, 시은이 밝게 물었다, 수호가 동네 마트에서 메로나를 가져왔기를 바라면서.

No, but we have popsicles full of fresh cream, don’t we?, replied Suho with a twinkle, staring below Si-eun’s waist.
아니, 생크림 가득한 아이스바가 있는데 왜? 수호가 반짝이는 눈빛으로 대답했다, 시은의 허리 아래를 바라보면서.

Mine is sea-salt caramel, yours is vanilla.
내 건 소금 캐러멜이고, 네 건 바닐라야.

… … yah… Ahn Suho…you…you must be the healthiest guy in this neighborhood, really.

That morning, they had dessert for breakfast.

The nurses spoke a lot more carefully to Dr Yeon whenever Mr Ahn failed to saunter in, usually at some time between 1 and 2 pm.
간호사들은 안 씨가 들어오지 않을 때마다 연 박사에게 훨씬 더 조심스럽게 말했는데, 보통 오후 1시에서 2시 사이였다.

They also made sure to take their coffee strong, because Mr Ahn’s absence meant an afternoon of soldierly alertness throughout the clinic.

One file out of place, one delay too many and Dr Yeon would deliver The Glare.

Cackling erupted all around Yeon’s Coven.
연 마녀단 주변에서 낄낄거리는 소리가 터져 나왔다.

Some of them thought back to the one (and only) time Mr Ahn had arrived in the evening, around when they were closing for the day.
그들 중 일부는 미스터 안이 저녁에 도착했던 (그리고 단 한 번뿐이었던) 때를 떠올렸는데, 문 닫을 무렵이었다.

Dr Yeon had already emerged from his room to do a debriefing with the staff.
연 박사는 이미 방에서 나와 직원들과 브리핑을 하고 있었다.

In fact, he was so stern, the staff half-expected he would snap at Mr Ahn.

Instead, the dark clouds around Dr Yeon dissipated and he told the nurses he would clean up and close the clinic himself, a first.

It was like witnessing a sunrise at night.

‘It’s been a hard day. Sorry if I was strict. I will see this last patient. You should all go back and rest,’ he had said in rather urgent, short phrases.
‘힘든 하루였어요. 엄격했다면 미안해요. 이 마지막 환자는 제가 볼게요. 다들 돌아가서 쉬세요,’ 그는 다소 급하고 짧은 문장으로 말했다.

Early the next morning when a groggy Dr Yeon popped up unexpectedly from behind the registration counter, he badly frightened the first nurse to open the clinic doors, who had thought she heard a couple of large mice scurrying about.
다음 날 이른 아침 멍한 연 박사가 접수 카운터 뒤에서 예상치 못하게 불쑥 나타났을 때, 그는 병원 문을 연 첫 번째 간호사를 심하게 놀라게 했는데, 그녀는 큰 쥐 몇 마리가 뛰어다니는 소리를 들었다고 생각했었다.

He apologized profusely of course, and tried strangely hard with large hand gestures to direct her attention to a nice breakfast (his treat, also a first),

Ah… you’re here again. What is it this time?, asked Dr Yeon tiredly.
아… 또 왔네. 이번엔 뭐 땜에 그래?, 연 박사가 지친 듯 물었다.

Mr Ahn puffed out his cheeks and clutched the side of his face in mock pain.
안 씨는 볼을 부풀리고 가짜 고통으로 얼굴 옆을 움켜쥐었다.

I haf toof achy,
이가 아프요,

He mumbled, child-like.
그는 아이처럼 웅얼거렸다.

Performed to perfection by a grown man with sinewed forearms, the aegyo got to Dr Yeon who summoned all his resources to suppress a smile.
근육질 팔뚝을 가진 성인 남자가 완벽하게 연기한 애교는 연 박사에게 먹혔고, 그는 미소를 억누르기 위해 모든 자원을 동원했다.

He tried frowning, but Mr Ahn could see the edges of his lips twitching upwards.
그는 인상을 찌푸리려 했지만, 안 씨는 그의 입술 끝이 위로 경련하는 걸 볼 수 있었다.

You just had a toothache last week. How many toothaches will you have?
지난주에도 치통이 있었는데. 얼마나 더 있을건데?

As many as the teeth I have, replied Mr Ahn, flashing his toothiest grin.
제 이 개수만큼이요, 안 씨가 이를 드러내며 환한 미소를 지으며 대답했다.

‘Aish your teeth are freakin’ perfect! thought Dr Yeon as he rolled his eyes.
‘아이씨 하나도 문제가 없고만’ 연 박사는 눈을 굴리며 생각했다.

Excuse me, I’m not a dentist, ok?
저기요, 나 치과의사 아닌거 알지?

The previous week Dr Yeon, who could be curiously pure hearted and unsuspecting at times, relented and went to inspect Mr Ahn’s open mouth, dentist or not.
지난주 가끔 신기하게도 순수하고 의심 없을 수 있는 연 박사는, 치과의사든 아니든 굴복해서 안 씨의 벌린 입을 검사하러 갔다.

He needed to make sure that there was no grave trouble growing that could take Mr Ahn away from him.
그는 안 씨를 자신에게서 앗아갈 수 있는 심각한 문제가 자라고 있지 않은지 확인해야 했다.

But when Dr Yeon got near enough to feel the warmth of his patient’s breath, without any warning, Mr Ahn latched on to his neck and dragged him down for a very wet oral inspection of his own.
하지만 연 박사가 환자의 숨결의 따뜻함을 느낄 만큼 가까이 갔을 때, 아무 경고 없이 안 씨는 그의 목을 붙잡고 끌어내려 자기만의 매우 젖은 구강 검사를 했다.

Dr Yeon didn’t even have time to gasp.
연 박사는 숨 쉴 시간조차 없었다.

“I’m not falling for the same trick twice.” said Dr Yeon, stone-faced.
“같은 속임수에 두 번 안 넘어가.” 연 박사가 무표정하게 말했다.

“To be honest, I need an extraction, Dr Yeon.” Quite abruptly, Mr Ahn had become serious.
“솔직히 말하면, 발치가 필요해요, 연 박사님.” 갑자기, 안 씨가 진지해졌다.

This alarmed Dr Yeon, who pursed his lips, tapped his fingers on the consultation desk for a while, and then sheepishly pulled out a small new dental kit from his first drawer, freshly acquired solely for one patient’s dental needs.
이것은 연 박사를 놀라게 했고, 그는 입술을 오므리고, 진료 책상을 한동안 손가락으로 두드리다가, 멋쩍게 첫 번째 서랍에서 한 환자의 치과 필요를 위해서만 갓 구입한 작은 새 치과 키트를 꺼냈다.

Dr Yeon cleared his throat awkwardly and tried to pretend this was all part of his clinic’s setup.

It was Mr Ahn’s turn to suppress a smile.
이번엔 미스터 안이 미소를 억누를 차례였다.

Don’t just grab my head okay? You have no idea how strong you are.
그냥 내 머리 붙잡지 마, 알았지? 넌 너가 얼마나 힘이 센지 몰라.

Dr Yeon warned.
연 박사가 경고했다.

Got it.
알았어.

I mean it. I’ll be holding sharp tools all right?
진심이야. 도구가 꽤 날카롭다고 알았어?

Dr Yeon thought he saw mischief sparkling in Mr Ahn’s eyes.
연 박사는 안 씨의 눈에서 장난기가 반짝이는 걸 본 것 같았다.

But that was Mr Ahn’s default setting, so Dr Yeon ignored his suspicions and started stretching starched white linen sheets over the synthetic leather cushions of the examination table and topped it with a plush Tempur headrest.
하지만 그게 안 씨의 기본 설정이었으므로, 연 박사는 의심을 무시하고 진료 테이블의 합성 가죽 쿠션 위에 풀 먹인 흰 린넨 시트를 펴기 시작했고, 그 위에 푹신한 템퍼 헤드레스트를 올렸다.

He was still calculating the budget for a dental chair, but he had some space concerns and wasn’t sure if he could handle the questions the nurses were sure to ask.

He didn’t want any of them to volunteer as dental assistants.

Dr Yeon wanted to respond with a witticism, but seeing Mr Ahn on the makeshift bed and hearing that last line suddenly brought back memories of a particular dream.
연 박사는 재치 있게 대응하고 싶었지만, 임시 침대에 누운 안 씨를 보고 그 마지막 대사를 들으니 갑자기 특정한 꿈의 기억이 떠올랐다.

Of the many that haunted him at night, this was the oldest and by far the warmest one, but it was no less painful.
밤에 그를 괴롭히는 많은 것들 중에서, 이것은 가장 오래됐고 단연 가장 따뜻한 것이었지만, 덜 고통스럽지는 않았다.

With his big-brotherly embraces, Suho always tried to ward away Si-eun’s sleep demons, even back when they lived together as boys barely into adulthood.
형같은 포옹으로, 수호는 항상 시은의 잠 속 악마들을 쫓아내려 했다, 성인이 된 지 얼마 안 된 소년들로 함께 살던 때부터.

But then and now, Si-eun refused to say anything about his dreams. He was not a superstitious person, but he was deeply afraid they would manifest into reality if he talked about them.

Mr Ahn sensed Dr Yeon had retreated into himself, a sign that an old wound had opened. He never lets me have the last word. Was it something I said?

Dr Yeon snapped his rubber gloves with mock intimidation.
연 박사가 위협하듯 고무장갑을 탁 내리쳤다.

That’s more like him, thought Mr Ahn, though he wondered what Dr Yeon was hiding this time.
그게 더 그답네, 안 씨는 생각했다, 비록 이번엔 연 박사가 뭘 숨기고 있는지 궁금했지만.

Dr Yeon yanked his mind into total focus.
연 박사는 마음을 완전한 집중으로 끌어당겼다.

This kept the shadows at bay.

He grabbed his new toys and went to work on his Dentistry 101 guinea pig.

It was amazing how much one could learn from YouTube with proper (or improper) motivation, but without actual practice the tools felt awkward to hold and he was worried he could hurt Mr Ahn with the tartar pick for real.

If it turned out Mr Ahn really needed serious work, like draining a gum abscess or worse, Dr Yeon was mentally prepared to refer him to the finest consultant specialist dentists in all of Seoul.

He would close the clinic for the day and sit in the waiting room himself.

Currently, Dr Yeon methodically noted all his deficiencies as a wannabe dentist for future improvement; he wasn’t even quite sure how to position himself, and shifted around uncomfortably to get a better view of Mr Ahn’s mouth.

His round eyes widened unblinking and his mouth hung open slightly.

But he couldn’t tell Dr Yeon this observation.

Somewhere in the process of admiring the white pearls of Mr Ahn’s teeth, and realizing he had been deceived once again, Dr Yeon became aware of an intimate clutch.

He looked down to see he had been delicately cupped by Mr Ahn’s right hand.

He removed his tools from Mr Ahn’s mouth.
그는 안 씨의 입에서 도구를 꺼냈다.

Took you forever to get into position,

said Mr Ahn, grinning.
안 씨가 씩 웃으며 말했다.

That’s really distracting, you know?

Dr Yeon replied, waving a metal pick in Mr Ahn’s face.
연 박사가 안 씨의 얼굴에 금속 픽을 흔들며 대답했다.

I can tell from your firm response. Looks like you do like getting grabbed by the head.
딱딱해지는 거 보니 알겠네. 머리 잡히는 거 좋아하는 것 같은데.

Do you want your teeth examined or what?
이 검사 받고 싶은 게 아니면 뭔데?

I said I needed an extraction, not an examination.
검사가 아니라 발치가 필요하다고 했잖아.

And what does our honoured client want to extract?
그럼 우리 귀한 환자분께서는 뭘 발치하고 싶은건데요?

I want an extraction of caramel, salted like the sea.
바다처럼 짠 캐러멜 발치를 하고 싶어.

Dr Yeon asked incredulously, but already he was failing to stop himself from brightening.
연 박사가 믿을 수 없다는 듯 물었지만, 이미 그는 밝아지는 자신을 막는 데 실패하고 있었다.

Dr Yeon’s ears turned pink, and a small chuckle, rare as unicorns, sang out from his lips as he fondly recalled words from his late teenhood.
연 박사의 귀가 분홍빛으로 물들었고, 유니콘만큼 희귀한 작은 킥킥거림이 그의 입술에서 흘러나왔다, 10대 후반의 말들을 다정하게 떠올리면서.

Suho’s improvised mantras didn’t dispel desire—they did the exact opposite—but they banished all of Si-eun’s heavy thoughts from their sunny presence.
수호의 즉흥 주문들은 욕망을 없애지 않았다—정반대였다—하지만 그것들은 시은의 무거운 생각들을 햇살 같은 존재로 쫓아냈다.

I will guard him as long as I breathe, Dr Yeon swore in the quietest part of his mind.

Mr Ahn loved seeing Dr Yeon like this. I will make him this happy all his life. This psycho really has the purest smile.

Then Mr Ahn thought about the kind of extraction they were about to perform. Hmm, maybe not that pure.
그러고는 안 씨는 그들이 하려는 발치의 종류에 대해 생각했다. 흠, 그렇게 순수하진 않을지도.

Hey. You know, I haven’t showered yet.
저기. 나 샤워 아직 안한 거 알지.

said Dr Yeon.
연 박사가 말했다.

Oh, organic ice cream for me then.
그러면, 유기농 아이스크림이네.

That’s disgusting.
더러워.

You’ll never be disgusting to hyung.
형한테 너가 더러운 적은 없어.

Somehow this cheesy line went straight to Dr Yeon’s heart.
어떻게든 이 치즈 같은 대사가 연 박사의 심장을 직격했다.

Thanks, but I’m showering and so are you. Listen to your doctor.
고맙지만, 나도 샤워할 거고 너도 해야해. 의사 말 들어.

said Dr Yeon, as he grabbed Mr Ahn’s hand. Mr Ahn put up no resistance and happily trotted to the bathroom.
연 박사가 안 씨의 손을 잡으며 말했다. 안 씨는 저항하지 않고 행복하게 화장실로 종종걸음쳤다.

In their post-dessert bliss, they remained as a single entity snuggling under the soft running water.
디저트 후의 행복 속에서, 그들은 부드럽게 흐르는 물 아래서 껴안은 하나의 존재로 남아 있었다.

Then Dr Yeon spoke: “Suho-ya.”
그러자 연 박사가 말했다: “수호야.”

“Mmm?” He rarely calls me so tenderly, thought Mr Ahn as he nuzzled a smile into Dr Yeon’s shoulder from behind.
“음?” 이렇게 다정하게 부르는 건 드문데, 미스터 안은 생각하며 뒤에서 연 박사의 어깨에 미소를 비볐다.

Why don’t you ever tell me when you are not coming to the clinic?
왜 병원에 오지 않을 땐 미리 말을 안해?

Oh? Doesn’t that make for a nicer surprise? thought Mr Ahn, oblivious to the deep fears his non-visits triggered in his bestie.
오? 말안하는 게 더 깜짝 재미 아니야? 안 씨는 생각했다, 자신의 부재가 절친에게 촉발하는 깊은 두려움을 전혀 모른 채.

Of course I don’t. You make it sound like my illnesses are planned.
당연히 안 하지. 내가 병을 꾸며낸 것처럼 말하네.

Yeah yeah whatever, King of Toof Achy. Anyway, I’m glad you came.
그래 그래 뭐든지, 치통의 왕. 어쨌든, 와줘서 기뻐.

Oh I’m not done coming. Just give my boy five minutes to recharge.
오 아직 다 안 왔다고. 내 아들에게 재충전할 시간 5분만 줘.

One night, not long after Suho had boasted of his serving size (“mine is a good two inches more generous”), Si-eun, in an uncharacteristically petty moment, put some measuring tape to good use as soon as he was sure Suho was out cold and snoring.
어느 날 밤, 수호가 자신의 서빙 사이즈를 자랑한 지 얼마 안 됐을 때 (“내 건 2인치는 더 관대해”), 시은은 특이하게 쪼잔한 순간에, 수호가 완전히 잠들어 코를 골고 있다고 확신하자마자 줄자를 잘 활용했다.

The results confirmed that Suho had a remarkable animal instinct for sensing distance, right down to the inch.
결과는 수호가 인치 단위까지 정확한 거리 감지에 대한 놀라운 동물적 본능을 가지고 있다는 걸 확인해줬다.

I’ll be sure to use some teeth the next time, Si-eun had thought as he pouted. Meanwhile, Suho was consuming so much internal strength to keep from laughing that he was about to break into a sweat.
다음번엔 이를 좀 사용해야겠어, 시은은 삐진 채로 생각했다. 한편, 수호는 웃음을 참느라 너무 많은 내적 힘을 소모해서 땀을 흘리기 직전이었다.

How am I so damned good at acting? he thought.
나 어떻게 자는 연기를 이렇게 잘하지? 그는 생각했다.

He wondered why Si-eun couldn’t tell from how quickly a full measurement was reached that he must have been totally awake and enjoying the scientific process.
그는 시은이 전체 측정이 얼마나 빨리 도달했는지로부터 자신이 완전히 깨어서 과학적 과정을 즐기고 있었다는 걸 왜 알아채지 못하는지 궁금했다.

He had made it a point to tease Si-eun about finding the ‘correct angle’ ever since.
그는 그 이후로 시은에게 ‘올바른 각도’ 찾기에 대해 놀리는 걸 포인트로 삼았다.

They continued their embrace, unwilling to part.
그들은 헤어지기 싫어하며 포옹을 계속했다.

Then Mr Ahn spoke: “Why do you treat all my illnesses so seriously?”
그러자 안 씨가 말했다: “왜 그렇게 내 병에 심각해?”

Because… I…I’m so scared the day will come when you are not lying.
왜냐하면… 나… 나는 니가 거짓말하지 않는 날이 올까 봐 너무 두려워.

Mr Ahn had nothing to say to this. He couldn’t insist he was not lying, because that would have been a lie, and an insult to Dr Yeon’s sincere revealing of his insecurities.
안 씨는 이에 대해 할 말이 없었다. 그는 거짓말하지 않는다고 고집할 수 없었는데, 그것은 거짓말이 될 것이고, 연 박사가 진심으로 드러낸 불안감에 대한 모욕이 될 테니까.

But neither did Mr Ahn want to admit that he was always malingering just so that he could receive some therapy that invariably ended up in the shower.
하지만 안 씨는 샤워로 끝나는 치료를 받기 위해 항상 꾀병을 부린다는 걸 인정하고 싶지도 않았다.

Besides, the truth was deeper and cuter than that.
게다가, 진실은 그것보다 더 깊고 귀여웠다.

On days when Dr Yeon was simply too busy to give him more than a light peck on the cheek, Mr Ahn would still leave satisfied, and skipped home humming bright tunes.
연 박사가 단순히 너무 바빠서 뺨에 가벼운 키스보다 더 줄 수 없는 날에도, 안 씨는 여전히 만족하며 떠났고, 밝은 곡을 흥얼거리며 껑충껑충 집으로 갔다.

Really, he never lets me have the last word.
정말, 그는 절대 한 마디도 안 지지.

But Mr Ahn tried regardless:

Si-eun ah, I’m here. I’m here and I’ll always be here.

His back turned to Suho, Si-eun let the gratitude in his eyes brim over and mix with the warm waters of the shower, as a wave of the kindest déjà vu washed over him.
수호에게 등을 돌린 채, 시은은 눈에 가득 차오른 감사함이 샤워의 따뜻한 물과 섞이게 했다, 가장 친절한 데자뷰의 파도가 그를 휩쓸고 지나가면서.

Outside, the trainee nurse tapped her foot nervously as she struggled to remain smiley-faced at the growing string of angry, rich patients.
밖에서, 실습 간호사는 점점 늘어나는 기다림에 지쳐 화가나는 부자 환자들에게 웃는 얼굴을 유지하려고 애쓰면서 긴장해서 발을 톡톡 쳤다.

Several of them had already let loose deliberately audible sighs at her direction.
그들 중 몇몇은 이미 그녀를 향해 의도적으로 들리게 한숨을 내쉬었다.

Bloody dammit! Someone let those two know there is not enough waiting space on that sofa!
