This alarmed Dr Yeon, who pursed his lips, tapped his fingers on the consultation desk for a while, and then sheepishly pulled out a small new dental kit from his first drawer, freshly acquired solely for one patient’s dental needs.
이것은 연 박사를 놀라게 했고, 그는 입술을 오므리고, 진료 책상을 한동안 손가락으로 두드리다가, 멋쩍게 첫 번째 서랍에서 오직 한 환자의 치료를 위해서만 갓 구입한 작은 새 치과 키트를 꺼냈다.

Dr Yeon cleared his throat awkwardly and tried to pretend this was all part of his clinic’s setup.
연 박사는 어색하게 목을 가다듬고 원래부터 클리닉 세팅의 일부인 척하려 했다.

J: Right.
J: 맞아요.

Everything in our arc appears like Harry Potter’s Room of Requirement when needed, but there’s no way a dental kit would appear in a family medicine clinic HAHAHA
우리 아크에서는 해리포터의 필요의 방처럼 필요한 모든 것이 나타나지만, 가정의학과 병원에 치과 키트가 나타날 리 없죠 하하하하

It was Mr Ahn’s turn to suppress a smile.
이번엔 안 씨가 미소를 억누를 차례였다.

“Don’t just grab my head okay? You have no idea how strong you are.”
“내 머리 붙잡지 마, 알겠지? 넌 네 힘이 얼마나 센지 몰라.”

Dr Yeon warned.
연 박사가 경고했다.

J: When living together at Suho’s grandma’s house, it was probably mostly the right side grabbing the left side’s head hard…
J: 수호 할머니가 물려준 집에서 함께 살 때, 아마 주로 오른쪽이 왼쪽 머리를 세게 쥐는 일이 많았을 거에요…

“Got it.” “I mean it. I’ll be holding sharp tools, all right?”
“알았어.” “진심이야. 도구가 날카롭다고, 알았어?”

J: Even if he had tools sharper than sharp tools, unless the world splits in half, there’d be no use for them on Suho.
J: 날카로운 도구보다 더 날카로운 도구를 가졌어도, 세상이 반으로 갈라지지 않는 한, 수호에겐 쓸모가 없겠죠.

Dr Yeon thought he saw mischief sparkling in Mr Ahn’s eyes.
연 박사는 미스터 안의 눈에 장난기가 반짝이는 걸 본 것 같았다.

J: Why are mischievous men attractive to the end? Of course, there’s the prerequisite of having Suho’s face.
J: 왜 장난기 많은 남자들은 끝까지 매력적인 걸까요? 물론, 수호 얼굴을 가졌다는 전제 조건이 있긴 하지만요.

But that was Mr Ahn’s default setting, so Dr Yeon ignored his suspicions and started stretching starched white linen sheets over the synthetic leather cushions of the examination table and topped it with a plush Tempur headrest.
하지만 그게 안 씨의 기본 설정이었으므로, 연 박사는 의심을 무시하고 진료 테이블의 합성 가죽 쿠션 위에 풀 먹인 흰 린넨 시트를 펴기 시작했고, 그 위에 푹신한 템퍼 헤드레스트를 올렸다.

J: 친구, 진짜로, 아마추어 작가인가요?

He was still calculating the budget for a dental chair, but he had some space concerns and wasn’t sure if he could handle the questions the nurses were sure to ask.
그는 여전히 치과 의자 예산을 계산하고 있었지만, 공간 문제가 있었고 간호사들이 분명히 물어볼 질문들을 감당할 수 있을지 확신이 없었다.

He didn’t want any of them to volunteer as dental assistants.
그는 그들 중 누구도 치과 보조로 자원하기를 원하지 않았다.

J: Seems like Dr Yeon’s reputation among the nurses is ‘hot/weak look but difficult personality’ HAHAHA
J: 간호사들 사이에서 연 박사의 평판은 ‘섹시한/연약한 외모지만 어려운 성격’ 같네요 하하하하

After Mr Ahn had made himself comfortable, he remarked, “I swear other clinics don’t make their clinic beds so comfortable.”
안 씨가 편하게 자리를 잡은 후, 그는 말했다: “맹세컨대 다른 병원들은 진료대를 이렇게 편하게 안 만들어준다고.”

J: If young Si-eun had Suho ‘flirting’ like this, he would’ve looked with those blank eyes and said ‘I made it comfortable for you’ straightforwardly, making Suho flustered instead.
J: 어린 시은이 수호가 이렇게 ‘작업’ 걸면, 그 멍한 눈으로 쳐다보며 ‘너 편하라고 만든 거야’ 직설적으로 말해서 수호를 당황하게 만들었을 거예요.

But now, not long after their reunion, completely smitten with the fine man Suho’s become, he seems to be trying to hide his feelings. That shy look is so lovable.
하지만 지금은 재회한 지 얼마 안 돼서, 파인 맨 수호에게 완전히 반해서, 감정을 숨기려는 것 같아요. 그 수줍은 모습이 너무 사랑스러워요.

“Dr Yeon Si-eun. You really are a psycho, you know that?”
“연시은 박사님. 너 진짜 또라이인 거 알죠?”

Dr Yeon wanted to respond with a witticism, but seeing Mr Ahn on the makeshift bed and hearing that last line suddenly brought back memories of a particular dream.
연 박사는 재치 있게 받아치고 싶었지만, 임시로 만든 간이 침대에 누운 미스터 안을 보며 그의 마지막 대사를 들으니 갑자기 특정한 꿈의 기억이 떠올랐다.

J: You really have me in the palm of your hand.
J: 정말 저를 손바닥 안에 쥐고 계시네요.

Showing these two puppies head-over-heels in love, then suddenly reversing the mood – love it…
두 강아지가 사랑에 푹 빠진 걸 보여주다가 갑자기 분위기를 반전시키는 거 – 좋아요…

That memory must be sticky, right? Validated.
그 기억은 끈질기겠죠? 공감돼요.

It’ll follow Si-eun forever and ever…
시은을 영원히 따라다닐 거예요…

Of the many that haunted him at night, this was the oldest and by far the warmest one, but it was no less painful.
밤에 그를 괴롭히는 많은 것들 중에서, 이것은 가장 오래됐고 단연 가장 따뜻한 것이었지만, 덜 고통스럽지는 않았다.

With his big-brotherly embraces, Suho always tried to ward away Si-eun’s sleep demons, even back when they lived together as boys barely into adulthood.
형같은 포옹으로, 수호는 항상 시은의 잠 속 악마들을 쫓아내려 했다, 이제 막 성인이 된 소년들로서 함께 살던 때부터.

But then and now, Si-eun refused to say anything about his dreams.
하지만 그때나 지금이나, 시은은 자신의 꿈에 대해 아무 말도 하지 않았다.

He was not a superstitious person, but he was deeply afraid they would manifest into reality if he talked about them.
그는 미신을 믿지 않았으나, 언급하면 현실로 나타날까 봐 깊이 두려워했다.

J: And he wouldn’t have the confidence to face Suho, hearing the specific details of his dreams.
J: 그리고 꿈의 구체적인 세부사항을 듣고 수호를 마주할 자신감도 없었을 거예요.

When Suho was being beaten defenceless, Suho had already lost consciousness – Si-eun was the one who saw all that like recorded footage…
수호가 무방비로 얻어맞을 때, 수호는 이미 의식을 잃었지만 – 시은은 녹화된 영상처럼 그 모든 걸 본 사람이에요…

He would do anything to keep Suho safe.
그는 수호를 안전하게 지키기 위해 무엇이든 할 것이다.

Even if it meant believing in nightmares and boogeymen. Or buying a dental chair.
비록 그것이 악몽과 괴물을 믿는 것을 의미하더라도. 또는 치과 의자를 구비하는 것이라 할지라도.

Mr Ahn sensed Dr Yeon had retreated into himself, a sign that an old wound had opened.
안 씨는 연 박사가 상념에 빠진 걸 눈치챘다, 그의 오래된 상처가 열린 신호였다.

J: So great… even in the actual show, they don’t talk much but understand situations just by looking at each other’s faces…
J: 너무 좋아요… 실제 드라마에서도 말은 많이 안 하지만 서로 얼굴만 봐도 상황을 이해하잖아요…

If it turned out Mr Ahn really needed serious work, like draining a gum abscess or worse, Dr Yeon was mentally prepared to refer him to the finest consultant specialist dentists in all of Seoul.
만약 안 씨가 정말로 진지한 치료가 필요한 것으로 보여지면, 잇몸 농양을 배출하거나 더 심한 것이라면, 연 박사는 서울의 최고 전문 치과의사들에게 그를 의뢰하려고 마음 먹었다.

He would close the clinic for the day and sit in the waiting room himself.
그는 그날 병원 문을 닫고 직접 대기실에 앉아 있을 것이다.

J: I was already overlapping that scene!
J: 저 이미 그 장면을 겹쳐보고 있었어요!

He looked down to see he had been delicately cupped by Mr Ahn’s right hand.
내려다보니 미스터 안의 오른손에 섬세하게 받쳐져 있었다.

He removed his tools from Mr Ahn’s mouth.
닥터 연은 안 씨의 입에서 치료용 툴을 꺼냈다.

J: Dr Yeon bought a dental kit for Ahn Suho, was prepared to close the clinic and take him to the best dentist if there were gum problems, but all Mr Ahn was thinking about was how to ‘position’ his right hand on Si-eun. So cute.
J: 연 박사는 안수호를 위해 치과 키트를 샀고, 잇몸 문제가 있으면 병원 문도 닫고 최고의 치과의사에게 데려갈 준비가 되어 있었는데, 안 씨는 오른손을 어떻게 시은에게 ‘포지션’할지만 생각하고 있었네요. 너무 귀여워요.

“I can tell from your firm response. Looks like you do like getting grabbed by the head.”
“단단해지는 거 보니 알겠다. 헤드 잡히는 거 좋아하는 것 같은데?”

J: At this point, Dr Yeon should already be biting his lips tight.
J: 이 시점에서 연 박사는 이미 입술을 꽉 깨물고 있어야 해요.

“Do you want your teeth examined or what?”
“이 괜찮은지 검사 받으려는 거 맞아, 아니면 뭐래?”

“I said I needed an extraction, not an examination.”
“검사가 아니라 발치가 필요하다고 했잖아.”

“And what does our honored client want to extract?”
“그럼 우리 귀한 환자분께서는 뭘 발치받고 싶은건데요?”

“I want an extraction of caramel, salted like the sea.”
“바다처럼 짠 캐러멜을 발치 하고 싶어.”

J: They remember all their secret languages from when they were young lovers… (once again my body melts…)
J: 어린 연인이었을 때의 은밀한 언어들을 다 기억하고 있네요… (또다시 몸이 녹아요…)

Actually Suho is good at wordplay in the show too (Seong-je is the best at wordplay),
사실 드라마에서도 수호는 말장난을 잘하거든요 (말장난은 성제가 제일 잘하지만요),

so this feels like a joke Suho would make, really.
그래서 이건 정말 수호가 할 법한 농담 같아요.

Dr Yeon’s ears turned pink, and a small chuckle, rare as unicorns, sang out from his lips as he fondly recalled words from his late teenhood.
연 박사의 귀 전체가 분홍빛으로 물들었고, 유니콘만큼 희귀한 작은 킥킥거림이 그의 입술에서 흘러나왔다, 10대 말미에 나눴던 말들을 다정하게 떠올리면서.

J: Look, I knew it was ‘memory summoning’
J: 봐요, ‘추억 소환’인 거 알았어요.

Suho’s improvised mantras didn’t dispel desire—they did the exact opposite—but they banished all of Si-eun’s heavy thoughts from their sunny presence.
수호의 즉흥 주문들은 욕망을 없애지 않았다—정반대였다—하지만 그것들은 햇살이 되어 시은의 무거운 생각들을 쫓아냈다.

J: When Suho was on a ventilator for almost 2 years, wasn’t the face Si-eun missed most that guppy-like face with the stupid smile?
J: 수호가 거의 2년간 인공호흡기를 달고 있을 때, 시은이 가장 그리워한 얼굴이 바로 그 바보 같은 미소를 짓는 구피 같은 얼굴 아니었나요?

I will guard him as long as I breathe, Dr Yeon swore in the quietest part of his mind.
내가 숨 쉬는 한 그를 지킬 거야, 연 박사는 마음속 가장 조용한 곳에서 맹세했다.

J: Right, you can’t meet a face like Ahn Suho’s again in life haha
J: 맞아요, 안수호 같은 얼굴은 인생에서 다시 만날 수 없으니까요 하하

Mr Ahn loved seeing Dr Yeon like this.
미스터 안은 이런 연 박사를 보는 게 좋았다.

I will make him this happy all his life.
평생 이렇게 행복하게 해줄 거야.

This psycho really has the purest smile.
이 또라이… 진짜 완전히 순수한 미소를 가졌다니까.

J: The two puppies love each other so much they fit together like puzzle pieces…
J: 두 강아지가 서로를 너무 사랑해서 퍼즐 조각처럼 딱 맞아떨어지네요…

My little sadistic demon is crawling up inside me,
제 안에 소악마가 기어올라오고 있어요,

They’re so happy I want to spoil it a little huhuhu
너무 행복해해서 조금 망치고 싶어요 흐흐흐

Then Mr Ahn thought about the kind of extraction they were about to perform.
그러고는 안 씨는 그들이 하려는 발치의 종류에 대해 생각했다.

Hmm, maybe not that pure.
흠, 그렇게 순수하진 않을지도.

J: Primary extraction proceeds at Yeon Clinic,
J: 1차 발치는 연 클리닉에서 진행되고,

Secondary extraction proceeds at Suho’s house near Anguk Station after Dr Yeon gets off work.
2차 발치는 연 박사 퇴근 후 안국역 근처 수호네 집에서 진행되겠네요.

“Hey. You know, I haven’t showered yet.” said Dr Yeon.
“야. 샤워 아직 안한 거 알지.” 연 박사가 말했다.

“Oh, organic ice cream for me then.”
“오, 그럼 유기농 아이스크림이네.”

“That’s disgusting.”
“역겹다고.”

“You’ll never be disgusting to hyung.”
“형한테는 절대 역겹지 않거든.”

Somehow this cheesy line went straight to Dr Yeon’s heart.
어떻게든 이 치즈 같은 대사가 연 박사의 심장을 직격했다.

J: Even if Ahn Suho had said ‘cheese’ instead of ‘organic’ with that look,
J: 안수호가 그 표정으로 ‘유기농’ 대신 ‘치즈’라고 말했어도,

it would’ve gone straight to Dr Yeon’s heart.

Thinking of two otters crying from happiness in the bathtub made me want to give them some trials (smiles evilly)
욕조에서 행복에 겨워 우는 두 수달을 생각하니 시련을 주고 싶어졌어요 (악하게 미소)
